Why an owl? Why the logo?

The explanation behind Patronus’ owl logo is fraught with history and mythology. A Patronus, as all Harry Potter fans know, is an animal guardian that appears when the spell “Expecto Patronum!” is used. This spell provides a silvery protector against evil forces, providing hope and light even in the darkest of times.

The Patronus of Mandy Long, founder and CEO of Patronus Health, is an owl—more specifically, the owl of Athena.

Athena is the Greek goddess of wisdom and heroism. She is the daughter of no mother; instead, she sprung from Zeus’ head. When she was “born,” she was fully clothed in armor. She is skilled in warfare, strategy, and justice. She is often pictured wearing a helmet and holding a spear, with a little owl fluttering around her.

This little owl symbolizes wisdom and truth. The owl would sit on Athena’s blind side, allowing her to see the whole truth. She was never without this avian guide. The owl also was the guardian of the Acropolis, the famous building that became the pinnacle of Greek civilization. The Acropolis of Athens, a beautiful, ancient citadel, still stands in Athens as a mark of Greece’s powerful history. Athens’ adoption of the owl as a sacred symbol demonstrates its trust in and admiration of the goddess of wisdom. There is even an actual owl named after Athena: the Athene noctua, also known as “the little owl.”

The Roman response to the Owl of Athena was the Owl of Minerva. Minerva is the Roman goddess of wisdom, war, and the arts. Similar to that of Athena, Minerva’s owl symbolizes wisdom and truth. As the famous philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel famously said, “The owl of Minerva spreads its wings only with the falling of the dusk,” describing the way in which the owl comes to life when it seems as though there is no truth, only muddled darkness.

So, how does all of this tie into Patronus’ mission?

In the healthcare industry, it can be difficult for patients to see exactly what their medical bills cost and cut through the numbers to find the lowest price. The healthcare system is fraught with pitfalls, twists, and turns, and those who are not professionally trained advocates can fall victim (through no fault of their own) to a “blind side.”

Patronus connects advocates and patients and provides a guide to reveal the whole truth behind medical costs. Patients can take charge of their healthcare through the help of our in-house advocacy team, as well as all the information we provide to assist them on their healthcare journey. Let Patronus be your little owl, showing patients the truth of the healthcare system and how to navigate it.
